Diamonds are the most famous and desirable of all the precious gemstones and have been used for thousands of years for decoration and as a symbol of everlasting love.
Diamonds are graded on the 4 C's; Carat, Clarity, Colour and Cut.
The size of a diamond is given by its' weight in carats' and points, with one carat being equal to 100 points. Therefore a 25 point diamond weighs a quarter of a carat.
The clarity of a diamond refers to the presence of inclusions within the stone. Only a small proportion of mined diamonds are used as gemstonesand of these, diamonds which are 'eye clean' (those which do not contain any inclusions when viewed with the naked eye) are preferred.
Most diamond gemstones are practically colourless or 'white'. Impurities alter the colour of a diamond to shades of yellow and brown, to pink and blue.
The most widely used diamond cut today is the brilliant cut. This type of cut was designed to split and scatter the highest amount of light possible from the diamond. Other cuts have been used in the past such as rough and old cuts, and even more are in use today such as baguette, marquise, princess and pear cuts. The quality of the cut is paramount to the overall quality of the diamond.
