Ruby is the birthstone for the month of July and also marks a 40th wedding aniversary.
Rubies are often used with other gemstones such as diamond to create beautiful Ruby and diamond rings and jewellery.
Rubies have been mined since the time of the ancient Roman Empire and along with Diamonds, Sapphires and Emeralds are among the most popular gemstones in use today.
Like Sapphires, Rubies are made up of the mineral corundum and the colour varies from light pink to a deep blood red (often called 'pigeon blood red').
