Amethyst is the birth stone for the month of February and are a violet form of quartz. Due to their attractive purple colouring amethysts are often found in Antique and Vintage Rings and Jewellery.
Amethysts have been mined since the time of the ancient Egyptians and Romans and remained popular from medieval times through to the 19th and 20th century.
In ancient times amethyst was thought to prevent intoxication. Indeed the name amethyst is ancient Greek for 'not intoxicated'.
